About Freedmen

Continuing the Legacy of freedman's

Established in 1865 to promote financial inclusion and economic empowerment for formerly enslaved people, Freedmen’s Bank was a pioneering institution committed to building wealth for Black communities. Today, Freedmen Green Bank and Trust is carrying that legacy forward by advancing economic justice through sustainable, green lending practices. Our mission is to provide equitable access to capital, focusing on championing clean energy and environmental sustainability. We believe that financial empowerment and sustainability go hand in hand.

The very right to be human is denied every day to hundreds of millions of people as a result of poverty, the unavailability of basic necessities such as food, jobs, water and shelter, education, health care and a healthy environment.

– Nelson Mandela
